How it's calculated
It starts from the vehicle's reference value (not what you paid at auction). Freight and 2% insurance are added to get the CIF value. On the CIF we apply the tariff (20%), ITBIS (18%), selective tax (15%) and CO2 tax (2%), a 5% plate adjustment and the minimum margin law (10.2% of 27% of CIF), plus first plates ($150) and the marbete sticker ($30). The final amount is set by the Dominican customs agency (DGA).
Frequently asked questions
Why aren't taxes based on what I paid at auction?
Customs uses a reference value by make, model, year and trim. Even if you buy a damaged car cheaply, taxes are calculated on that reference value.
Which model years can I import?
The general rule for used light vehicles is up to 5 years from manufacture. Always confirm the current rule with the DGA before buying.
Is the estimate exact?
It's an estimate using reference rules. The DGA may adjust the value or charges at assessment.
I can't find my trim. What now?
Choose the closest trim or type the reference value manually if you know it. If in doubt, contact us and we'll review it with you.
